The majority of us work and live in urban and peri-urban spaces. That’s where the jobs are, where we form community with others, where we build our lives. If we are lucky, we will have tree lined streets on our way to the office or outside our window and access to parks or other outdoor environments. However, it’s no secret that as society continues to urbanize, we are becoming more and more disconnected from nature and all of the benefits it offers. We may not realize it, but this  has profound implications for our wellbeing and how we move through the world. Let’s take a look at the impacts on each of our body systems.

Mental Health

Feeling mentally tired or overwhelmed? Consider going for a walk or sitting on a park bench for a few minutes. Spending time in nature reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, while also boosting creativity and cognitive function. Neuroscientific research indicates that regular exposure to nature activates brain regions associated with relaxation and attention, leading to improved mental well-being. It also increases serotonin levels which increase feelings of happiness and well-being. Psychological theories like the "Attention Restoration Theory" propose that nature effortlessly captures our attention, allowing our minds to rest and recover from mental fatigue, ultimately improving concentration and clarity.

Emotional Wellbeing

Nature uplifts our spirits and enhances mood by evoking feelings of awe, gratitude, and wonder, fostering inner peace and contentment. Connecting with nature cultivates empathy and compassion through an appreciation for interconnectedness. Studies show that nature stimulates the release of endorphins and oxytocin, promoting joy, love, and emotional connection. Nature-based therapies regulate the amygdala, enhancing emotional stability and resilience, while supporting emotion regulation techniques like mindfulness and grounding for effective coping with life's challenges.

Physical Health

On a physiological level, outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or walking in nature promote physical fitness and health that contribute to the optimal functioning of the body. Exposure to natural sunlight boosts vitamin D levels for bone health and immune function, while fresh air improves respiratory health and oxygenation. Natural light regulates circadian rhythms and melatonin production for better sleep. Neuroscience also tells us that nature activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing blood pressure and heart rate.

Connection with Something Greater

Nature offers opportunities for introspection and connection, not only with the self but something greater. Neuroimaging studies reveal that nature-induced experiences of awe activate brain regions associated with a heightened sense of consciousness and spiritual awareness, prompting contemplation of life's meaning and purpose. Immersing ourselves in natural surroundings fosters a sense of awe and deepens our understanding of the universe and our connection to it.

How can spending time in nature support team cohesion and resilience?

We know from above that time spent in nature boosts mood and energy levels, right? Consider the impact that this has on individual team members when they show up to a meeting. Individual experiences in nature positively impact the way team members show up to work by enhancing mood, energy, focus, creativity, resilience, and overall well-being.

Team members who have had the opportunity to recharge in nature are more likely to bring a renewed sense of vigor, mental clarity and optimism to their interactions with colleagues. Team members who have spent time in nature are likely to return to work with increased focus and productivity, allowing them to tackle tasks and projects with greater efficiency and effectiveness. Furthermore, team members who have had the chance to unwind in nature are better equipped to manage workplace stressors and navigate challenges with a calm and composed demeanor.

Need to get those creative juices flowing? Consider the fact that nature stimulates creativity and fosters divergent thinking. Team members who have immersed themselves in natural surroundings are more likely to approach problems with innovative solutions and think outside the box. Time in nature allows the mind to relax and be more present, necessary components of creative thinking that can spark new ideas or insights that they can bring back to the team.

Integrating Nature in the Workplace

By prioritizing time in nature, team members can cultivate the personal qualities and skills that contribute to a positive and productive team dynamic. And integrating time in nature into the work environment can promote employee well-being, creativity, and productivity. Here are some tips and strategies for incorporating nature into the workplace:

Outdoor Meeting Spaces

Designate outdoor areas, such as gardens, rooftops, or patios, as meeting spaces. Conducting meetings outdoors allows employees to enjoy fresh air and natural surroundings while discussing work matters. Provide comfortable seating and shade to ensure a conducive environment for collaboration.

Nature Breaks

Encourage employees to take short nature breaks throughout the day. Schedule designated times for individuals or teams to step outside and enjoy a walk in a nearby park or green space. These brief respites can help alleviate stress, boost mood, and enhance focus upon returning to work.

Nature-Inspired Workspace Design

Bring elements of nature into the office environment through biophilic design principles. Incorporate natural materials, such as wood and stone, into furniture and decor. Add plants and greenery to indoor spaces to improve air quality and create a sense of connection to nature.

Outdoor Activities and Events

Organize outdoor activities and events for team building and recreation. Plan hiking excursions, picnics, or nature walks for employees to participate in together. These outings provide opportunities for bonding, relaxation, and rejuvenation outside of the traditional work setting.

Flexible Work Policies

Implement flexible work policies that allow employees to work remotely or outdoors when feasible. Provide options for telecommuting or flexible scheduling that accommodate employees' preferences for integrating nature into their workday.

Wellness Programs

Consider working with an integrative coach to build a wellness program for the organization that promotes outdoor activities and connection with nature. Provide resources and incentives for employees to engage in nature-based activities.

By integrating these tips and strategies, workplaces can create a culture that values and prioritizes time in nature, ultimately enhancing employee well-being, creativity, and job satisfaction.
